White House Opens Door to Big Donors, and Lobbyists Come In

Michael Luo and Mike McIntire, The New York Times News Service: ''Although Mr. Obama has made a point of not accepting contributions from registered lobbyists, a review of campaign donations and White House visitor logs shows that special interests have had little trouble making themselves heard. Many of the president s biggest donors, while not lobbyists, took lobbyists with them to the White House, while others performed essentially the same function on their visits. More broadly, the review showed that those who donated the most to Mr. Obama and the Democratic Party since he started running for president were far more likely to visit the White House than others.''

Growth of Income Inequality Is Worse Under Obama than Bush

Matt Stoller, Naked Capitalism: ''Recently, the President gave a speech in which he demanded that Congress raise taxes on millionaires, as a way to somewhat recalibrate the nation's wealth distribution. His advisors, like Gene Sperling, are giving speeches talking about the need for manufacturing. A common question in DC is whether this populist pose will help him win the election. Perhaps it will. Perhaps not. Romney is a weak candidate, cartoonishly wealthy and from what I've seen, pretty inept. But on policy, there's a more interesting question. A better puzzle to wrestle with is why President Obama is able to continue to speak as if his administration has not presided over a significant expansion of income redistribution upward.''

Uncompromising Photos Expose Juvenile Detention in America

The U.S. locks up children at more than six times the rate of all other developed nations. The over 60,000 average daily juvenile lockups, a figure estimated by the Annie E. Casey Foundation (AECF), are also disproportionately young people of color.

40 Years on, 1960s Black Radical Still Suffers Racial and Political Injustice

Rania Khalek, Truthout: ''The consequences of America s racist history still linger deep into the present. No one understands this better than Gary Freeman, a 1960s black civil rights activist whose life has been turned upside down by the racial and political injustice perpetuated first by the United States and now by Canada. Freeman has spent the last four years separated from his Canadian wife and four grown children due to false allegations that he is a former member of the Black Panthers Party. This accusation stems from an incident that took place in 1969, when Freeman, just 19 at the time, shot a white police officer in the arm, which he claims was in self-defense.''

Activists Occupy the Justice Department to Demand an End to Racist Mass Incarceration

Rania Khalek, Truthout: ''On Tuesday, April 24, several hundred activists from around the country gathered outside the Justice Department (DOJ) in Washington, DC, to call for an end to mass incarceration.... It s no secret that America holds 25 percent of the world s prisoners, more than any other nation on earth, yet makes up only five percent of the world s population, with the costs falling predominately on communities of color. While African-Americans make up just 13 percent of the overall population, they account for 40 percent of US prisoners.''

How the Amendment to End Slavery Was Damaged by Racism

Gary Freeman, Truthout: ''The Constitution of the United States of America was created to enable the founding ideals and principles of the Declaration of Independence. Yet something went terribly wrong. It failed to recognize, defend and enable those ideals. The tragedy of such a gargantuan failure is still with us today in the form of institutionalized and systemic racism and a deeply embedded exploitation of labor. Both are still given constitutional sanction.''

Tale of a rogue

The Libertarian Enterprise
by Dean Wet

I don t usually advocate military intervention, but I am aware of a country that would seem, by our government s standards, to desperately need it. This nation has one of the largest standing armies in the world. They spend an enormous portion of their GDP on their military, and on devising new and more dangerous WMD. While claiming their love of peace, they routinely bully or invade other nations...

Ten rules of the ''war on terrorism''

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

I confess that I have trouble sometimes figuring out the nature and logic of the so-called war on terrorism. The following are what seem to be the principles of this 'war': 1. Since the 'war on terrorism,' according to U.S. officials, is a real war, the president has all the powers of a military commander in a real war, and those powers, they say, are the same omnipotent powers that are wielded by military dictators...
